Our next lunchtime event is at The Sportsman on Wednesday February 18th 1130 and is a talk by local resident Paul Fouracre who is Professor emeritus at the University of Manchester where he was one time Head of History -  'The Curious Story of St Wilfrid and the Oldest Churches in Sussex'

Sussex (‘the kingdom of the South Saxons’) was in the mid seventh century the last place in England to become Christian.  This talk looks at the career of the controversial bishop Wilfrid who was said to have been responsible for converting the South Saxons.  Wilfrid was actually a northerner, and we can probably trace the churches he built because they were designed along Northumbrian lines.  Two of them, Aldingbourne and Lyminster , have written documents going back to this time.  The talk explains how it is possible to identify and trace these early churches

Those wishing to attend the talk must please register for the event. If you are staying for lunch please indicate this on the form and we will arrange a booking with The Sportsman. Please fill in and submit the form
